High-ranking Clinton administration officials who have resigned amid
controversy or are currently under investigation:
UNDER INVESTIGATION
--Henry Cisneros. Attorney General Janet Reno asked a special court to name
an independent counsel to look into allegations that the housing and urban
development secretary lied to the FBI about payments to a former mistress during
the confirmation process for his 1992 nomination to the Cabinet.
--Federico Pena. The Justice Department's criminal division trying to
determine what role, if any, the transportation secretary may have played in the
award of a contract by the Los Angeles transit system to a management firm he
founded. They are trying to determine if there are any allegations of a federal
crime by Pena to investigate.
--Ron Brown. Investigators are determining whether the commerce secretary
fully disclosed his finances and complied with all tax laws. In a separate case,
Brown was cleared last year after a preliminary investigation into allegations
he accepted money from a Vietnamese businessman.
--Ira Magaziner. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., has been
asked by a federal judge to investigate whether the White House adviser lied
under oath about the activities of the health reform task force headed by
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
RESIGNATIONS
--Mike Espy. The agriculture secretary left office at the end of last year
amid an investigation into his acceptance of airplane flights and Super Bowl
tickets from companies regulated by his department.
--Joycelyn Elders. The surgeon general, a target of conservatives for her
views on abortion, drug legalization and sex education, was fired last year
after saying school children should be taught about masturbation.
--Roger Altman. The former deputy treasury secretary resigned in August as a
result of controversy over the Whitewater affair, the administration's handling
of regulators' inquiries into a failed Arkansas savings and loan with ties to
President and Mrs. Clinton.
--Jean Hanson. The former treasury general counsel resigned with Altman after
testifying at the same congressional hearings on Whitewater.
--David Watkins. The former advertising executive and White House
administrator hopped a presidential helicopter for a golf outing. He resigned
and is repaying the government.
--Bernard Nussbaum. The former White House counsel, who worked with Mrs.
Clinton years ago on the staff of the House Watergate impeachment committee,
resigned last March under pressure over his handling of the Whitewater affair.
--Webb Hubbell. The No. 3 official at the Justice Department, who had been a
partner of Mrs. Clinton at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, Ark., resigned and
later pleaded guilty to bilking his former law firm and clients out of $400,000.
--Les Aspin. The former defense secretary resigned over U.S. military policy
regarding Somalia.
